First and foremost must be new jobs and training opportunities for local youth, in local small and medium sized business enterprise and projects backed by council. The north island, fly-in re-developers are killing local initiative and hope. Mayor Parker’s CCC was too focussed on inner city retail trade driving buildings, run by big players, and has missed seeing people / ‘the wood for the trees’, ignoring great social capital here.

Yet it is crucial that Christchurch voters show our city is open for business and welcoming work contributions from all around the world. Overseas workers must feel and be safe here. But the Christchurch mayoral nominations as at 15 August 2013 showed the city of old, living up to its bad reputation for intolerance:

There is a strong story to be told from a personal perspective.

Watch this space for Team Christchurch policy platform in more detail.

e.g. Calling for immediate cease of city council’s pressure waste-water domestic system conversions, per court judgement and pending consultation with recipient home-owner groups and exploration of the full range of alternatives. The climate of central government dictate is no excuse for council doing the same. Ref. Council to consult on wastewater tanks The Press 05/08/2013.

Improve council’s management of social housing, as one means of relief and stability for less able people under pressure. Other objectives of council electoral campaign are: jobs and opportunity for youth in the rebuild; more music events, alcohol-free, through council promoting CBS Arena, repairing Town Hall auditorium ASAP (but not expensive convention centre or covered stadium) and use of parks. Also call for more youth activity centres like Zebedees; better public transport frequency and exchanges, with commuter rail and cycling routes linking up.
